We were incredibly fortunate to have a visit from community policeman Mr Abassi on Sunday, who came to talk to us about road safety. He taught why it is so important to ALWAYS wear our seatbelts in the car, even for short journeys, and how to safely walk on the pavements and cross the road.

Happy New Year and welcome back! We have lots of fun and exciting opportunities in store for the children and plenty of opportunities for you to be involved in their learning. The children are gradually settling into the new term and getting used to the early starts again. Thank you for ensuring your child arrives at school prepared for the day ahead. Please continue to check Planners regularly and encourage your child to read at home every day. Year 3 are now on Twitter, @BSAKyear3, please follow us and enjoy our regular updates. With the cooler weather children are understandably wearing jumpers and cardigans, particularly in the morning. Please ensure these are clearly labelled with your child's name and class. This will avoid the development of a mountain of unclaimed lost property items. As per the School Policy, children may wear trousers during the cooler months. girls may wear tights although these are discouraged for Swimming and PE days. Your help with maintaining a high standard of correct school uniform is appreciated. Please find attached a curriculum overview for the first half of this term. This highlights the areas of study across the curriculum should you wish to support your child at home. At the end of the document there are some important dates for your diary. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher. Best wishes, The Year 3 Team. There will be seven 40-minute maths lessons per week. One lesson will focus on mental maths and improving mental agility. Addition and subtraction Add and subtract pairs of 2-digit numbers, including near multiples; add three 2-digit numbers. Place value and division Understand place value in 3-digit numbers, including money; multiply and divide numbers by 10 and 100 and understand the effect; understand that division is the inverse of multiplication. Children must continue to review and learn the following times tables: 2,5,10, 3 and 4. SCIENCE: Science is taught for three 40-minute sessions per week. Much of the work is practical-linked with the development of scientific skills. Budding geologists will find out what is under our feet during this topic. Children are always fascinated by rocks; this half term, they will describe rocks and compare their properties after tackling exciting activities. Children will learn about how fossils are formed in sedimentary rocks. They will study, draw and label a cross-section of the Earth and find out how parts of the Earth’s crust move against each other. GEOGRAPHY: This term in Geography children will be learning about volcanoes. This is a topic that really excites them. We will look in particular at the location of volcanoes around the world, their causes and the impact that they have on the local environment and its inhabitants. Children will again have the opportunity to use the library and internet to research and we would encourage them to keep an eye on the news for any topical information relating to volcanic eruptions around the world. We will find out about famous volcanoes and place the dates of their eruption on a simple time line. The topic will culminate in the children making and erupting their own volcanoes! ICT: This term we will be focussing on producing a Power point presentation covering aspects of our Term 2 Theme ‘Violent Earth’. The children will learn how to produce a power point by creating slides describing different aspects of our theme. They will use a snipping tool to snip pictures from other sources, save the pictures then add them to their Presentation. The children will learn to use 2Animate to make a Gif (Graphics Interchange Format) to add animations to their slides. Once finished, the children will begin to review their presentations by providing each other with feedback, ensuring all text contrasts from the background so others are able to read from a distance. They will then think about effectively presenting their presentations to an audience. Do encourage your child to have a go at home as well. PSHCE: The children will begin the term by setting their own New Year’s Resolutions. They will write targets for the coming term, one for school and one for home so please check with your child what they have chosen so you can follow this up at home. We will then be looking at road safety and how we keep safe in our environment. The local community police officer will be visiting us to discuss this further with the children and teach them all about the Green Cross Code. Healthy Living will be discussed once more and the children will debate as to whether BSAK is a health promoting school, asking questions such as “What do we do in school to ensure that we are healthy? What more could we do?” The Values of this half term are Happiness and Trust. We will look at stories such as The Secret of Happiness and Dear Zoo to develop the children’s concepts of these important values. ART: The children will look at the work of William Morris, who used various aspects of nature in his patterns. They will consider the colours and materials used, thinking about reasons for his choices. They will be encouraged to look closely at the detail. They will look at ways in which patterns can be repeated and consider different printing techniques. Children will create their own design in the style of William Morris and will transfer this to a polystyrene tile using a variety of marking tools. They will then use simple block printing techniques to create either wallpaper or place mats in the style of William Morris. They will complete this study by evaluating their work. The work of the Japanese artist Hokusai will be a focus, particularly his painting ‘The Great Wave’ as children will use water colours to replicate this piece of Art work. PE: During PE the children will be focusing on Athletics in preparation for Sports Day, acquiring skills for a range of track and field events. Children will be looking at technical aspects of each discipline, before performing to achieve the highest possible medal type which correlates to progressive times and distances. In Swimming, children will continue to refine their front crawl and backstroke along with the appropriate starts and finishes, whilst beginning to develop their breast stroke technique. FRENCH: In French this term, we will be focusing on Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood). Pupils will learn how to read a fairy-tale, understand words from context and create storyboards. This will also allow us to learn parts of the body (Oh, what big eyes you have etc.!). We will use songs and games to reinforce the new vocabulary. In the second part of the term, we will be adding to the pupil’s personal information details. The pupils can already introduce themselves, stating their name and age. They will learn how to say where they live and to state their nationality. Whilst this sounds straightforward, it actually introduces masculine and feminine adjectives, which are an important grammatical feature of French (however, as always, it will be done in a fun way!). MUSIC We will be focusing on songs about the Romans and learning how to sing expressively and in tune, showing control of the musical elements. We will also be learning how to create, combine and perform rhythmic and melodic material as part of a group and class performance of a song. We will be learning how to recognise and find notes on a keyboard and how to use untuned percussion instruments effectively in a piece of music. Visit our new Maths section of the blog to find some links to some amazing websites with games and resources you can use to practise your Maths at home.
